A recent case of AI-driven fraud has once again stirred controversy within the industry. A deepfake video, created without authorization, used the likeness and voice of a well-known Hong Kong actor to promote an online gambling platform in Malaysia. The actor has publicly denied any association with the platform and has urged fans to stay vigilant to avoid being deceived.
The fraudulent deepfake video falsely portrayed the actor as an ambassador for the gambling platform. In the video, the AI-generated version of the actor praises the platform as “fun, safe, and easy to win on.” To enhance its realism, the video even includes clips from the actor’s past film appearances, making it difficult for viewers to detect the fabrication.
Following the incident, the actor and their agency swiftly released a statement, emphasizing that they had never collaborated with the platform. They condemned such fraudulent activities and did not rule out taking legal action against any unauthorized use of their name and image.
This deepfake controversy further highlights the growing misuse of artificial intelligence in fraudulent schemes. Cybersecurity firm Group-IB recently revealed that over 1,300 scam gambling websites and more than 500 AI-generated fake advertisements are currently circulating in the market. These fraudulent ads often employ deepfake videos, AI-generated multilingual voiceovers, and even fake customer testimonials to increase credibility and mislead unsuspecting users.
The primary goal of these scams is to lure victims into downloading gambling applications embedded with malware, which can then steal personal and financial information. According to identity verification firm Sumsub, nearly 47% of European online gambling operators suffered revenue losses exceeding 10% due to fraud in 2024.
This incident underscores the urgent need for the iGaming industry to strengthen regulations and fraud prevention measures. As AI technology advances, criminal organizations are exploiting new techniques to manipulate public trust. This not only threatens consumer rights but also severely impacts the reputations of celebrities and businesses. In an era where AI-generated content is becoming increasingly prevalent, general consumers and players must remain highly vigilant to avoid falling victim to AI-driven scams.
